Halloween parties will never be complete without carved pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns hanging on doorsteps, windows and even in walls. You can find them almost anywhere like restaurants, department stores and on every houses.

Follow these simple steps if you are planning to carved pumpkins and Jack o Lanterns for the upcoming Halloween party this November 2009

1. Assuming that you already have an idea on what your carved pumpkin looks like, the very first step is to buy the right size of pumpkin that suits best on your design. Take note that a good pumpkin should be not too ripen, orange in color and doesn’t have any bruises, spots or damage. Be sure to look for pumpkins with strong stem but never ever lift the pumpkin by the stem. Try to smell the pumpkin around its stem and on top. If it’s too smelly, then there’s a possibility that it’s too ripe. Also, be sure that the bottom of your pumpkin is flattened so that it will stand upright.

2. The Preparation. There are a lot of carving tools and knives available at the craft store but in case you would like to save money, kitchen knives of different sizes can also be used. The next step is to clean out the pumpkin. Cut a circle properly around the top of the pumpkin but be sure not to damage the stem. Remove the top and put it aside. You need a metal spoon or a scraper and carefully scrape all the pulp and seeds. Make sure that it is completely cleaned on the inside. After all the pulp has been scraped out, you can now start carving your pumpkin.

3. Design. The best way to start is to trace your design first on a tracing paper so you will have a better view on what your carved pumpkin’s outcome will be then trace the design onto the pumpkin using a carbon paper so you will have a guide on where to carve. You can search on the internet for “free carved pumpkin design” or “free pumpkin carving patterns” or click here and print it out then trace the design onto your pumpkin.

4. Carving. Start carving your pumpkins carefully and poke holes along the lines of your image. After you completely make a dotted outline, start carving using a carving tool or a knife by connecting those dots. Make sure you are cutting straight into the pumpkin and not at an angle.Trim up the edges with your small knife or carving tool until you are done! Your carved pumpkins will last longer by coating every exposed surface with a petroleum jelly. This will include the entire inside surface of the pumpkin to prevent it from drying up.

By the way, if you have nothing else to do this coming Halloween then visit Las Vegas and buy Las Vegas Show Tickets here.
